With Roosevelt in Cuba 1898 (Original) at DutchArtGallery.net

Size: 30 x 40

With Roosevelt in Cuba 1898 is a portrait of one of the 10th Calvary Buffalo Soldiers that fought with Teddy Roosevelt. I was fortunate to work with the historian, Henry B. Crawford, to ensure his weaponry and uniform are historically accurate. Henry suggested that I add a U.S. Army issued cartridge belt and a Springfield Krag Carbine Rifle. On Saturday, November 12, 2022, I was honored to receive a Second Place award for my 30" x 40" painting "With Roosevelt in Cuba 1898". The art showing, "Fresh Off The Easel" was sponsored at The Art Dutch Gallery in Dallas, TX. Dutch Gallery was also celebrating 56 years in business.

Creating historically correct work is very important to me...

Now, after working on this piece for a while, I found out that some of the uniform, firearm and location was not historically authentic. I was fortunate to find a generous credentialed historian to add their education and expertise to my meager artistic efforts. He made several suggestions that included: (1) changing the color this Buffalo Soldier's hat from blue to tan (2) making his weapon identify as a 1898 Springfield Krag Corbine (3) the location was a sugar cane field during the Spanish American War and (4) the addition of a neckerchief. This original oil painting can be purchased by contacting dutchartgallery.net

My main historical consultant, Henry B. Crawford, shared a photo of his authentic cartridge belt from the Spanish American War.
