Many former slaves became cowboys while others moved to escape oppression in the south. Exodusters was a name given to African Americans who migrated from states along the Mississippi River to Kansas in the late nineteenth century, as part of the Exoduster Movement or Exodus of 1879. Many of these folks traveled from the south in steamboats to get to Missouri and then walked across the state to Kansas. It was the first general migration of black people following the Civil War.

These people were freed slaves that heard about a better life up north in the state of Kansas. Their travel north would involve a trip to the Mississippi River to embark on a steamboat journey up to Saint Louis. After their long travel they would walk across the state of Missouri to get to Kansas territory.
This artwork was submitted to the American Plains Artists 36th Annual Juried Exhibit & Sale, November 5-December 5, 2021. The event was held at the CFD Old West Museum in Cheyenne, WY.
